Principal’s Message

Dear SGSians, parents and partners,

SGS has successfully implemented our Character and Citizenship Education framework that focuses on imbuing in our pupils; 21st Century skills that will help them meet the challenges of tomorrow. These initiatives have been recognised by MOE as the school was bestowed both the National Education Development Award and Character Development Award in 2011.

In 2011, the school attained our 11th Sustained Achievement Award (Uniformed Groups). The NCC and Girl Guides achieved the Gold standard for their efforts (the 5th for the NCC), while the Girls’ Brigade, Boys’ Brigade and Red Cross attained silver awards and the NPCC a bronze. Their excellent performance has justified our position as a DSA school for uniformed groups.

We have also qualified for a 2nd Sustained Achievement Award (Aesthetics), with the Gu Zheng Ensemble attaining Gold (with Honours), the Concert Band attaining a Silver, and the Dance Club clinching two bronze awards at the Singapore Youth Festival.

Not to be outdone, our C division Soccer boys have clinched the South Zone Champions medal for the third consecutive time, while our Basketball B division boys achieved 4th placing in the South Zone 2012.

For the GCE O-Level Examination, 82% of our Express stream pupils and 68% of Normal Academic pupils were eligible for JC/CI/Polytechnic. While the results for Secondary 4 Express remain constant, we have made a 19% improvement in the 5N results from the previous year. 19 students were successful in their applications for Direct Polytechnic Admission.

Our innovative approaches to classroom teaching include lessons using iPads and interactive white boards, and an authentic interdisciplinary learning experience focussed on the tourism and hospitality industry for 3NT pupils. The NT Elective programme also includes a 3-day work attachment with the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Our students also participated in numerous competitions and enrichment programmes such as the Science Advanced Elective Modules in collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic, and the elective modules certified by the ITE. Beyond Singapore, about 400 pupils and 50 teachers participated in overseas learning journeys to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, various parts of China, and Perth and Melbourne, Australia. There were also visits by students and staff of schools from Japan, Indonesia, Shanghai and Australia.

Our staff has explored new ways of teaching and engaging our pupils through the Professional Learning Communities (PLC). Most departments were able to share their practices beyond school, with 24 teachers and 5 departments sharing at the international level.

Looking beyond, we will continue to aspire to be a school of choice in the Serangoon Garden area and be recognised as a school that develops “gracious and responsible citizens with a zest for life and learning”.

Warmest regards,
Mr Ng Chee Kheong
Principal
