After graduating from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004, Cheng Hiang went on to obtain her Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) with Merit from the Nanyang Technological University.
She started her teaching career as a Physics teacher at Serangoon Garden Secondary School in 2005. She led one of the Science Department’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams in 2010 that looked into the use of Problem-based Learning (PBL) to improve the teaching and learning of Science. A student-centered approach using inquiry-based teaching strategies was incorporated in the Secondary 2 Express and Normal (Academic) Physics lessons to develop students’ problem-solving skills.
Cheng Hiang assumed the position of the Commanding Officer of the school’s NCC unit in 2009. Since then, she has organized and implemented a variety of military-related programmes to nurture responsible, resilient, disciplined and resourceful cadets. She set up the freestyle drills unit in the school in 2009. The freestyle drills team participated in the National Freestyle Exhibition Drills Competition in 2010 and 2011 and achieved 4th place in the Central district in both years. She was also in charge of training and guiding the unit in the National Challenge Quest in 2009 and 2010 in which they emerged 4th and 3rd in the Central district respectively. She has organised overseas Community Involvement Programmes for the school’s NCC unit to Chiang Mai, Cambodia and Vietnam from 2009. Under her guidance, the NCC unit has achieved very outstanding results for the past 3 years and achieved a Gold Award in the Best Unit Competition. This has contributed to the school being given recognition as a Niche School for Uniformed Groups in 2011 and being approved for the Direct School Admission (Secondary) programme for Uniformed Groups.
She was awarded the ‘Inspiring Staff Award’ (merit) in 2010 for her significant and positive influence on students in both teaching and learning and character development.
