HOD Aesthetics
Karamjeet has been in the education service since 1982. She has taught English Language, Literature, Home Economics and Food & Nutrition. Karamjeet has also taken the opportunities provided by the Ministry of Education to upgrade her educational qualifications, working through two Master Degrees – in Applied Linguistics (2006) and Youth Health and Educational Management (2010), both from the University of Melbourne. She won a commendation certificate from the Linguistics Department for outstanding results in 2003. She is currently working on her PhD, with a focus in the transition for young persons with special needs, at the National Institute of Education.
Karamjeet headed the Aesthetics Department in Tanjong Katong Girls’ School before moving to SGS. She was responsible for initiating the Aesthetics Festival in her former school, and won the Innovation in Teaching Award (Merit, 2000) organized by MOE and Hewlett Packard, and several Best Cluster Suggestion Awards (individual/ team awards). Karamjeet was also interviewed by TS, a publication of Temasek Polytechnic, to showcase teaching as a profession. Karamjeet believes that these accolades are a testimony of the quality standards espoused by the teams she had had the privilege of being part of.
At SGS, Karamjeet looks forward to creating better performance and holistic development of students through a quality Aesthetics education. Opportunities to go on learning journeys throughout her teaching service to schools in Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, and Melbourne has helped broaden her perspectives in her engagement with SGS students. This has resulted in the creation of several innovative programmes, such as inviting international communities (like the Mexican community) to showcase their culture to our students, creating manipulatives for the engagement of persons with Dementia (an SGS/ NYP/ IMH project), and a culinary elective programme with SHATEC.
Besides treasuring her time with her family, who reside both in Singapore and Melbourne, Karamjeet enjoys solitary walks and reading as a way of connecting with herself and her world. She also volunteers her time at weekly Meet-the-People Sessions.
