Department Programmes

Competitions

Through competitions like the Australian Mathematics Competition and the
American Mathematics Competition, the department aims to stretch our
pupils’ thinking and understanding of Mathematical concepts and pit their
Mathematical skills against pupils from other schools.

Sec 1 Bridging Programme

The department works on building the foundation of our Sec 1 pupils right from the beginning when they enter our school. In 2010, we welcome the first batch of 1NA pupils who went through subject-based banding in primary schools. To bridge the gap for some of the pupils who have taken Mathematics at Foundation level in primary school and are currently studying Standard Mathematics as well as pupils who have studied Standard Mathematics and need additional support, the department has implemented a 11-week Bridging Programme for them. The objective is to equip all Sec 1NA pupils have the basic Mathematical skills and knowledge as they start on Secondary One Mathematics curriculum.

Sec One Orientation Trail

To make interdisciplinary connections to what our pupils are learning in Mathematics and apply what they have learnt to daily life situations, the department organizes the Sec One Orientation Trail annually, in collaboration with the English Department. In 2009 and 2010, the trail took place at HortPark. All 1E pupils go on this inter-disciplinary Mathematics and English trail and carry out oral presentations demonstrating their understanding of Mathematical concepts when they return. They learn how to communicate confidently, incorporating the use of ICT to enhance their presentations.

Target setting and recognition scheme for pupils

The department is continually making the learning environment an emotionally safe one, characterized by positive teacher-pupil relationships. Our teachers communicate high expectations and care for students. Targets are set together by pupils and teachers at the beginning of the year. Also, awards are given to pupils who have performed consistently well or made significant progress in Mathematics. They are the “Most Consistent Awards” and “Most Improved Awards” given twice a year, to recognize publicly the efforts by our pupils.
